When did you start giving your baby her first solid foods? How many times in a day in the first few months?

My pediatrician told me to start feeding rice cereal now that she’s 4 months old. She has really good support of her head and neck. My aunt said it’s too early and that she’s never heard of any mom starting their babies with solids at 4 months. What was your experience? How was your baby reacting the first time you tried giving them their first rice cereal? Thanks!

I started my daughter on solids at 5 1/2 months. It used to be really common to start at 4 months, BUT now the AAP and most organizations strongly suggest waiting until 6 months, especially if you are breastfeeding. Even after that, milk/formula should be the main nutrition for quite some time. So if you decide to wait a bit, you would be perfectly justified. Baby is usually more ready if you wait a bit longer and has an easier time all around with it.
We actually have had a good experience so far. I mix her cereal with breast milk so it tastes familar, and so far she hasn’t spit anything out yet. She gets milk with a lot of the fruit, too, but she has eaten some plain – kind of made a face but kept going. Now she leans towards the spoon and kind of babbles happily while eating.
We did start with rice cereal, but you don’t have to, esp if you wait until closer to 6 months. A really great and informative website on starting solids is. It has info on how to make your own food, what foods are appropriate at what age, and how to get started on solids.
Its just your doc is saying this because she is probably eating to much. My daughter at 4 months was eating 8 oz every 3-4 hours- it wasn’t satisfying her. So he added rice cereal into her diet, and she is almost 5 months is doing a lot better and is more satisfied. But I would ask your doctor why she can start eating as early as 4 months because theirs usually a certain circumstance they start them that early. 6 months is the right age to start solids.
my baby is also 4 months but my pediatrician recommended me to wait till 6 month,so i am waiting and she also has good support of her head and neck
In a lot of cases it’s the old fashioned Aunt who gives the dangerous advice while the doc is sensible.
In your case, however, your Aunt has more knowledge on this subject than your doctor, who is giving you very bad advice.
I would wait until 6 months as per the world health organization.
I first fed my son solids the day after he turned 6 months. His first food was not rice cereal though.. it was butternut squash. He ate it great and swallowing perfectly without spitting any out!
While he was 6 months I fed him 1x a day.. often around 11:30am.. and gave him a new food every 3 days about. When he turned 7 months I started to feed him 2x a day. Once at 11:30am (that’s always when I introduce a new food so that I can check for a reaction while he’s awake) and then once around 7:30pm. He’s 7.5 months now. He eats roughly 7-8oz at his earlier feeding and 5-6oz at his later feeding. I don’t know exactly cause I make his own food and don’t really measure.. but I think it’s about that. I find when he’s cutting teeth he will refuse any solid food for about 3-5 days though. From what I understand that’s fairly common when they cut teeth though.
EDIT: My son only had breastmilk from 0-6 months and was 95th+ percentile the whole time. Infants don’t NEED solids. & rice cereal isn’t necessary. The iron is easily substituted from natural sources like sweet potatoes.
