What happens to mum and baby after labour and delivery?

baby
OH Baby Baby! due date today… asked:

I know the baby gets weighed, APGAR test is done, etc.. but how long does all this take? What’s happening to me during this time? When do they do the bath?

Also, if I wanted to room in with my baby do they need to take him/her to the nursery? Is it necessary?

How long did you stay in the hospital? Did dad stay with you?

Thanks for answering my questions of the day! :D lol.

This is how it went during my hospital stay..

While they were weighing the baby and giving him a quick cleaning, swaddled him etc, I was getting stitched up by the doctor.. then they wheeled us to the recovery room where the nurse gave our son a sponge bath in our room. They brought me breakfast and juices. The nurses show you how to do everything, feed you baby, change, etc.

Our son stayed in our room at all times, never went to the nursery!

He did leave the room when he got his apgar testing, circumsized ( hubby went with him ) , and hearing tests.

We stayed in the hospital one night after birth, 2 nights total ( one was during labor) Dad stayed right there with me at all times (except when he went to dinner real quick) They had a pull out chair bed for him to sleep on. Me, husband, and son all slept in my room.

All the tests are pretty quick – you probably won’t even notice the first one. The baby went right on my chest, they didn’t take it away to bath for at lesat 5-10 minutes I would say. During that time the placenta was delivered and then I was getting stitched up – I tore pretty badly so it took a while. My husband was actually holding the baby while that happened, but probably you could keep the baby if you wanted.

I roomed in with my baby – they took it to the nursery every night at midnight to do a wt check, but taht was all. If you have concerns about that call up your hospital and ask them about alternatives.

My baby was delivered around 4 pm – I stayed in the hospital for the entire next day and left around 11 am the next morning – so 2 nights. Dad did stay with me and it was WONDERUL! I lost a lot of blood so I had a hard time getting up at all, I would have had to be calling a nurse everytime I wanted to hold or feed the baby. And when she woke up enough to be fussy, I would have been the only one staying up all night with her. Lol, I was up anyway, but at least I had company. I love that I had teh company and support of my husband teh whole time, and that we started off (and kept) taking care of our baby together, dirty diapers and all.

Most hospitals offer tours of the maternity ward on a weekly basis – I would def. call up yours and ask when they are. Every hospital has different procedures, so the best ways to have your questions answered is to take a tour and talk to the nurse giving it.

It kinda goes all so fast when it’s happening so I can’t give an exact length of time, but it doesn’t take long. While they’re weighing the baby and all that, they clean you out and sew you up (if needed).

The baby is in your room more if you breastfeed. I chose not to, so my daughter was in the nursery at night. She was with me during the day unless I was napping or getting a quick shower.

I got to the hospital around 7am on a Monday (water broke at home) and delivered at 2:57pm that day. I was discharged on Wednesday afternoon so I stayed for 2 whole days. Dad stayed until about 9pm the day I had her and came back the next evening after work. I figured that I was surrounded by doctors and nurses who were much more help to me at that point in time than my fiance lol. Bills needed paid so I sent him to work. He ended up getting laid off 2 weeks later anyways so we were glad he went and didn’t stay with me. My family came to visit too for a little while so it was perfectly fine.

Good luck and congrats! It won’t be too much longer. I had both my children on October 6th (2002 and 2008) so I know how it feels to be pregnant all summer. Hang in there!

While your baby’s being checked over, you’ll be getting taking care of – delivering the placenta, getting sutured if you tore or had an epesiotomy, fluids or pitocin my be administered to you, you’ll probably get a clean gown, etc….

Generally they will clean the baby up right away (wipe off the vernix) and give him / her back to you as soon as possible. Barring any problems / complications, it shouldn’t take very long. I had my son back in my arms as soon as I was done getting my 2 stitches. 5-15 minutes? They’ll give baby his / her first bath a little later after you get to see him / her for a little while.

Using the nursery isn’t absolutely necessary if your baby is completely healthy. You may want to have the baby go to the nursery if you want to sleep through the night and are not nursing. Otherwise it should be just fine to have him / her room with you at all times. Dad can stay with you, but may have things to take care of at home. (I did 11 loads of laundry the day I was admitted and left 9 of them in our apartment complex’s laundry room. Plus, my husband wanted to get a night of sleep after our son was born….not in a hospital chair and had to check on our dog. He stayed with me except for at night and for food runs.)

I was in the hospital for 3 days, but could have gone home the day after my son was born and only been there for 2. I was induced and the first day was spent not laboring because the nurses didn’t give me my medications. I stayed a third day because my husband had to go back to work and I didn’t have anyone to help me at home.

What ever you want. You can tell them to give you the baby immediately and do all the weighing and shots and stuff later. It is YOUR baby; you can tell THEM what you want them to do and when.

What happens to you after birth is, first you have to wait like 10-30 minutes for the placenta to come out(don’t let them pull on the cord! it will cause hemorrhage!)–breastfeeding immediately after birth will speed up the birth of the placenta ; and after it comes out they will clean you up & stitch you up if you get episiotomy or tears; then they will put some gauze underwear with a pad on you & get you some clean garments, then you will be moved from delivery room to recovery room(& the baby goes with you if YOU so choose)

It is not necessary for them to take the baby away from you; they cannot force you to leave him in the nursery even if it’s hospital policy. If they tell you oh ..you can’t have him in your room he has to go to the nursery. Tell them to f*** off because they are not his parents; they can’t legally force you to stay in separate rooms.

I stayed in the hospital for 3 days & my husband stayed too. I know that some hospitals don’t allow the father to stay overnight (my sister’s husband was kicked out when she had her first)

  • Connor's Mommy:

the nurses brought my son to me after about 2 hours. it went fast to me. the dr sewed me up and that took like an hour then i went to my room and rested a little bit. the nurses clean the baby up like right after birth. my son stayed in the room with me all to time except maybe 2 or 3 hours a day. i was only at the hospital about 2 days my husband wasn’t able to be there cause he’s in the military but yes he could of stayed with us the whole time.

  • Mommy2Aly:

I ended up having a c-section. The nurse held my daughter up by my face so I could give her a kiss. Then I spend the next hour in recovery. They took her to the nursery where my husband got to feed her and then they took her to give her a bath and do some routine tests. About half and hour after I got into my room, they finally brought her in and I got to hold her for the first time. At the hospital I delivered at, they are very for the baby staying with the mom all the time. The nursery was an option (that I took advantage of since I obviously wasn’t going to be able to jump out of bed in the middle of the night to care for a baby) and no, my husband didn’t stay with me overnight. They usually took my daughter around 9 pm, which is when my husband would leave and bring her back in around 6:30 am.

  • Lexi:

when they clean baby up then they clean you up like take placenta out and if you need stitches put a pad under you for bleeding. Then they usually start letting in family to come see you and baby. Usually they move you to a new room and usually a stay is two days. You can have the baby stay in your room with you or if you both need some sleep they will take care of baby for a couple of hours so you can get some sleep.

hope I answered your question this is based off my experience of course and could be different for each person.

    good luck!

Well,my hospital,I will recover there for about an hour before moving up to our room that I will stay in for the rest of the time which is 1-2 days.. And during that time they will take the baby, make sure his/her temperature is at an appropriate level and then bathe him,and if the baby is okay and healthy after they thoroughly do a check-up, they will bring him back for nursing or just to be with you if that’s what you want.
Also my hospital doesn’t count the dad as a guest,he can stay with me the entire time and overnight.

    Speaking from my experience here:

All the measurements were done in the delivery room. As soon as they did the APGAR they gave her back to me to nurse. While they did her testing they delivered my placenta. It only took about 10 minutes. They can do the bath in your room, in fact they should so you can watch and you know how to do it.

If your baby is healthy there is no reason for her to ever go into the nursery. Even if she were to have jaundice they can put the lights in your room. If you don’t want your baby to leave, you have to be clear about that.

We stayed for 2 nights and 3 days, dad stayed with us.

When my son was born they put him on my chest … at that time (I didn’t know his 1 minute apgar was done). He was then weighed. Then he was put on a little thing just for babies … it has a heat lamp. They put his identification bracelets on, took his foot prints. Then swaddled him.

While that was going on my placenta was being delivered. They gave him to me … at that time I was being stitched up.

They then gave me 1 hour alone in the delivery room with him and my husband. They then took him to the nursery for his first bath and I was taken about 5 minutes later up to maternity.

I stayed for 2 days .. my husband was able to stay the whole time. He slept in the room.
